You know in the movies, when the woman takes off her helmet and shakes out her long hair...? Well, I do NOT look like that when I come back from riding my bike. This is probably an exclusively female predicament, but I suffer from terrible helmet hair. I have long curls which look dreadful when squashed.

Does anyone have any tips on avoiding/fixing the dreaded helmet hair? I was toying with the idea of a balaclava under my helmet to stop my hair being all static and flyaway. The main problem is it gets squashed and lacks volume after the helmet is removed. Although you could argue that if the helmet isn't squashing your hair it's not tight enough to do its job

Repair-wise, a brush might do the trick for straight hair, but us curly girlies can't do that without ending up with a pile of frizz. Today I resorted to a splash of water and a bit of fluffing up, but there must be a better way...?

A silk scarf! I swear by it coz i'm a pure girly girl. The only problem is when you have to take off your lid in a petrol station or anywhere for that matter and you can't be bothered figeting to fix it back on your head again. But I use it if i'm going somewhere nice on the bike.

I keep my hair in plaits, that way, my hair looks pretty much the same before and after!  Not exactly cutting edge but works for me...

I have exactly the same prob as vmac, I ride horses and a bike, so I have given up on my hair looking nice, it gets all messed up with my tube/buff goin over my head, so I just give up and wear it messy and up all the time, that way people think you're hair is supposed to have that 'messy' look, haha!

i to have long hair that has some curls but is mainly wavy, when i take my lid of i bend forward and use my fingers to kind of fluff it up (kind of hard to explain) when done as i straighten up i flick my hair back, hair looks ok as it isn't flat anymore but i would win any prizes at a competition.

Oh, I know what you mean, Virago. I have curly hair and it's a nightmare with a helmet. It just flattens it and that's that. If it's a short journey it'll bounce up again after a while but if it's a long one I find there's no help but to wash it.
A balaclava I found was even worse than the helmet on its own: totally flat and straight and lifeless. (It looked like the one time I had tried a hair-straightener. My flatmates made me promise never to do that again. )
What does help a little is using some "curl enhancing" product or other. I find that way the hair does recover some shape after a while.

You may have guessed I hate helmet hair! I don't particularly enjoy looking like a hag but it's especially annoying when I commute to work and have to look reasonably presentable.
Ah, it's good to have a little rant every once in a while

Tell you whats as bad, I am trying to grow a fringless bob.  I have taken to using a grip to hold my fringe back and look like a reject from WW2.  On top of that 9 times out of 10 I end up with a single hair tickling my nose and it drives me insane.  I would love to shake a curl.

That's because in the movies there's a subtle cut in the film - when a team of hair dressers and makeup artists rush in and do a repair job!!!   In the real world we're stuck with real helmet hair unfortunately!

I must admit though - mine was worse inthe old days when it used to be curly so I do sympathise!  The best "fix" is what has already been said - the good old tip yer head upsidedown and shake jobby!!  That's what I used to do too!  Now mines straight - so it just gets even flattter!  But - I've given up caring!!!

REALLY??  Hairdressers on set??   Oh, it's just not fair, is it?  I have, however, seen the odd girl turn up to a meet and do the actress thing with perfect hair and no hairdresser in sight... do you think she has just ridden around the corner?  I will keep that in mind next time...

I've never had a problem with helmet hair. Had a problem with my hair when it was in a bob and had one of those super long fringes. Had to keep on fiddling getting the whole of the fringe in the helmet. Friend cut it off in the pub and no problem since. My hair's quite short. Only problem is if I want it to look more messy I need to take the wax to work as I don't want to put it on and then put my helmet on making it all dirty.

I used to have that problem *wow*, I had short spikey hair, and my old helmet used to smell of all different sorts of wax.. its not good! I grew it because I got annoyed with having 'flat' spikey hair.. you can just never quite recover it!

I took his advice

Not quite a number 2 but I went from below shoulder length to less than an inch all over. Dries quicker now too! Stuff helmet on head, take a bit of hair product to work to neaten it up when I get there...viola!

To be honest I prefer it short, I would love to have long flowing film star locks but with very fine hair it just ain't gonna happen.

I have long, thick (below bra fastener length) layered at the front wavy hair that I straighten and so far I think I've found something that's not too bad.

Under helmet scull cap plus pigtails tied off at the nape of my neck.  Looks quite sexily ruffled with the front layers when I take the helmet off, and it shakes out OK too.

Hubby has unruly hair that's about 3 inches long on top and short back and sides and his is usually in a worse state than mine!!!

I am a tad late with this thread but I tell you what works for me.  Blow dry hair in the morning... arrive at work; lid off; bit of water dabbed all over and straight under the hot air dryer.  Bit of wax and et voila. fluffy hair and no frizz in sight! mine is in a chin length bob which flicks out.  Mind you, my commute is only half an hour. Anything longer than 90 mins and the only way to re-fluff my hair is to wash it.

Sounds good Justine. I'm going to try that. Esp as I've cut my hair short again. About 4 cms shorter than it was. So need wax and possibly make-up as well to give it even more of that feminine look. pff. It's a lot of work, you can't win can you but your idea souds great esp as we have a blow dryer thingy at work. Going to try it out.

And don't forget that other winter loveliness - the runny nose! (well, it happens to me, anyway!)

The hair thing is a problem. I have poker straight, fine long hair and when I take my helmet off, you can see all the ridges the liner has made! And if I forget to tie it back, it ends up like a ball of cobwebs!

well all i can say is that i never leave the house without the following....makeup brush - to brush over my face to even out face powder after taking helmet off. eye liner ( especially if you ride with visor open) and lip balm.Of course this changes with every womens preference of what makeup they use......dont you know, the pockets and paniers on womens bikes and jackets arent for anything else but an emergency make up kit and hair fixer upper.

As for helmet hair, the person who invents something to stop it and prevent it will be a very rich person. If you have short hair, push it behind your ears and if you have a fringe i suggest a travel hot hair brush, they are small and heat up very quickly with those little gas cylinders you stick in them.
Girls with curly hair should take a little bottle of spritzer with them, a few squirts and your hair is back to normal...something like frizz ease or something.
