Red’s first experience on track was at
the Ron Haslam Race School, a present from her
friends and family. She enjoyed it so much that
she immediately went in search of sponsorship.
Red’s 2nd outing on track was in a race
at the end of 2002 with Bemsee. From this Red
decided to enter the Rookie 400 championship
in 2003 with full sponsorship backing from Safeguard.
She found all the right lines on her 400 Kawasaki
and was a regular podium visitor. Red came second
in the Bemsee Rookie 400 championship in 2003
and proceeded to move up to the Bemsee Supersport
400 championship in 2004 where she encountered
confidence issues and physical problems with
her broken wrists following a huge incident
at the end of 2003.
Rebecca Cartwright, or 'Red' to her friends
is one of The Cartwright "sisters"
who have been making the headlines for their
racing achievements. They met up at Brands Hatch
for their first races in the Rookie 400 championship
and they have been inseparable both on and off
the track.
She took 2005 out to go travelling around the
world and joins the team to help out in 2006.
Red has now decided she's ready and fit and
starts racing with us again in July 2006. |
When did you start riding
bikes?
I started out at the age of 20 on a restricted Honda
VFR 400 NC30 going out on blasts with mates. I was
then invited into Sunday morning ride-outs with the
"Breakfast Club" - a group of fast riders
and ex racers in Bognor. I got my 400 derestricted
when I turned 21 and on the next Breakfast Run I blew
the bike up! The next week I got an R6 and the guys
said if I blew that up they'd club together and get
me an R1. I sold the R6 to go racing.
What made you start racing?
The guys in the Breakfast Club inspired me, especially
Glenn. I got lucky with a full sponsorship package
for my first season - by bragging about myself in
a pub and passing the "test" the next day
by losing my sponsor's friend on his XJR1300 on my
local roads. Chris Anton offered full spec sponsorship
for the 2003 season.
Who are your inspirations?
James Toseland and Glenn (from the Breakfast Club).
What are your aspirations?
During my first year of racing I dreamt of competing
in the British Supersports.
Who's your current sponsor?
Feisty sponsors including: Arai, SES and Wildcard
Photography.
How do you feel about racing?
GIRL RACERS ROCK! Racing gives you a buzz that you
just can’t explain to anyone unless they’ve
experienced it. The atmosphere in the paddock is awesome!
Bemsee and Feisty have a true family feel to them
that I feel honoured to be a part of.
