Being a sidecar passenger

By Shelley, of Feisty Racing

Ever fancied being a passenger on a side car outfit?

There are 2 different type of outfit, an F1 and F2; the difference being that the F2 is shorter and has a 600cc engine situated under the driver’s chest. The passenger has to work that bit harder to keep the outfit sturdy as it’s a lot lighter. And to be honest it’s a lot easier to learn on than an F1.

An F1 outfit is a lot longer, and the engine is sat behind the driver, the platform that you sit in is smaller as well, and its got a lot less movements for the passenger, and less handles. But on the other hand it’s twice as powerful, as they have a 1000cc engine... and a lot less forgiving.

You do need to be fit, flexible, and be able to anticipate what is required of you from the driver. Communication is paramount.

There is a lot you as a passenger can do to affect the outfit: from making the bike over or under steer to making the back wheel spin up or grip to give it drive to get out of the corner.

Unfortunately there is no easy way of getting a go on an outfit unless you have an ACU licence - there aren't track days for side cars! But once you have got one, the best thing is to advertise your self as a passenger that is available. A good place is www.steveenglish.co.uk

It’s a very friendly site, with lots of good advice as well.
If your interested, just come to one of the many race meetings, and just have a chat, every one is willing to help new comers, as there is a shortage of good passengers.
